Reinstallation as a last-resort step

1. Before You Install an eSIM

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM profile. You install it on a compatible phone, then use it for mobile data when a supported network is available.

Quick fix mindset: install carefully once, label the profile, then configure data and roaming. Do not delete and reinstall while experimenting.

Before you start, confirm four things:

  1. Your phone supports eSIM.
  2. Your phone is carrier-unlocked (or allowed to use another carrier’s eSIM).
  3. You have the activation details from your order (QR code and/or manual codes).
  4. You have a temporary internet connection for installation when your phone requires one (usually Wi‑Fi).

Looking for a plan first? Browse SparkRoam destination eSIMs or a regional guide such as the Caribbean eSIM travel guide.

2. Check Whether Your Phone Supports eSIM

eSIM support depends on the device model and, in some cases, the software version and the market variant of the phone. Do not rely on brand alone.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data / Mobile Service, depending on region).
  2. Look for options such as Add eSIM, Add Cellular Plan, or Set Up Cellular.
  3. If you do not see any way to add an eSIM, your device may not support it, or your software may need an update.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager (wording can vary by One UI version).
  2. Look for Add eSIM / Add mobile plan.
  3. If SIM manager has no eSIM option, the device or software build may not support eSIM.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or Mobile network).
  2. Look for Download a SIM instead? / Add eSIM / similar.
  3. Menu names can change by Android version.

Other Android phones

Manufacturers place eSIM settings in different menus. Common paths include Settings → Network & internet → SIMs or Settings → Mobile network → SIM manager. If you cannot find an add-eSIM option after checking the manufacturer’s help pages, treat the device as unsupported until confirmed.

Also check: some phones are dual-SIM in one market and not another. A carrier-branded model can also restrict eSIM features.

3. Check Whether Your Phone Is Carrier-Unlocked

A carrier-locked phone may refuse another provider’s eSIM even if the hardware supports eSIM. “Unlocked” usually means the phone can use networks/plans beyond the original carrier’s lock rules.

Practical checks:

  1. If you bought the phone from a carrier on an installment plan, confirm unlock eligibility with that carrier.
  2. If installation fails with lock / activation errors, unlock status is one of the first things to verify.
  3. Work phones managed by an employer may block adding personal eSIMs.

If you are unsure, contact your home carrier and ask whether the device is unlocked for international / third-party eSIM use.

4. What You Need Before Installation

  • Your SparkRoam order / plan confirmation
  • QR code and/or SM-DP+ address + activation code (if provided)
  • A stable Wi‑Fi connection if your phone requires internet to download the eSIM profile
  • Enough free eSIM slots on the device (phones have a limited number of installed profiles)
  • Battery charge high enough to finish setup without interruption

Tip: screenshot or save activation details somewhere you can reach without mobile data, but do not post QR codes publicly.

5. How to Install an eSIM

Most travel eSIMs install by QR code. Some also support manual entry. Exact labels vary by device and OS version—use the closest match on your phone.

Important: installation downloads the profile onto the phone. That is different from connecting to a destination network. You may install before travel and connect later, depending on the plan and your setup preference.

iPhone

QR-code path (typical):

  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi.
  2. Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data / Mobile Service.
  3. Tap Add eSIM / Add Cellular Plan.
  4. Choose Use QR Code (wording may vary).
  5. Scan the QR code from your order.
  6. Follow the prompts to add the plan.
  7. When asked, give the line a clear label such as SparkRoam — France or SparkRoam — Japan.
  8. Decide whether to turn the line on now or keep it off until you need it.

Manual installation on iPhone (if your order includes codes):

  1. Open the same Add eSIM flow.
  2. Choose the manual / enter details option if shown.
  3. Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code exactly as provided.
  4. Complete the prompts and label the eSIM.

If iOS offers “Transfer from nearby iPhone” or carrier quick install, use those only when they match your provider’s instructions. For a purchased travel eSIM QR, stick to the QR or manual path from your order.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi.
  2. Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
  3. Tap Add eSIM.
  4. Scan the QR code, or choose the option to enter details manually if available.
  5. Follow the prompts until the plan appears in SIM manager.
  6. Rename/label the eSIM if Samsung allows custom names on your One UI version.
  7. Leave the eSIM off until you are ready to use it, unless you intentionally want it on now.

Samsung menus differ by model and One UI version. If you do not see SIM manager, search Settings for “eSIM” or “Add mobile plan.”

Google Pixel

  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi.
  2. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
  3. Tap Download a SIM instead? / Add eSIM (labels vary).
  4. Scan the QR code or enter the activation details manually if offered.
  5. Finish setup and rename the SIM if the Pixel settings allow it.

Other Android phones

There is no single Android path that fits every brand. Look for an eSIM / mobile plan / SIM manager section, then:

  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi if required.
  2. Start Add eSIM / Download SIM / equivalent.
  3. Scan the QR code or enter manual activation details.
  4. Confirm the new plan appears in your SIM list.
  5. Label it immediately if the phone supports renaming.

If your manufacturer’s path is unclear, use the phone’s official support documentation for “add eSIM” rather than guessing through unrelated menus.

QR-code installation tips

  • Increase screen brightness on the device showing the QR code.
  • Do not scan a blurry screenshot if you can open the original QR.
  • Hold the phone steady; clean the camera lens.
  • If one phone cannot scan another phone’s screen, print the QR or display it on a laptop.
  • Some phones also let you choose the QR image from Photos/Files instead of using the camera.

Manual installation, where applicable

Manual install is useful when the camera cannot scan the QR code. Use only the values from your order. Do not invent an SM-DP+ address or activation code.

If your order does not include manual codes, stay with QR installation or contact SparkRoam support for the correct activation method for that plan.

6. What to Do Immediately After Installation

  1. Confirm the new eSIM appears in your SIM list.
  2. Label it clearly (see Label Your eSIMs).
  3. Decide whether to leave it off until travel or turn it on now.
  4. Do not delete it to “test” anything.
  5. Save/keep your order email and QR access until you have confirmed the eSIM works at your destination.
  6. If you are still at home and the plan is destination-specific, do not worry if it does not show full local service yet.

Having the profile installed is progress. Connection still depends on destination coverage, correct data-line selection, roaming settings, and network registration.

7. How to Select the eSIM for Mobile Data

Critical point: turning the SparkRoam eSIM on does not necessarily mean your phone is using it for mobile data. Many phones keep the primary SIM as the data line until you change it.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data / Mobile Service.
  2. Tap Cellular Data / Mobile Data.
  3. Select the SparkRoam / travel eSIM line—not your home line, and not an old travel profile.
  4. Return to the SIM list and confirm the travel eSIM itself is turned on.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
  2. Confirm the travel eSIM is enabled.
  3. Under mobile data (or preferred data SIM), select the travel eSIM.
  4. Confirm calls/SMS preferences separately if you still want your primary number for those.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
  2. Enable the travel eSIM.
  3. Set it as the preferred SIM for mobile data.
  4. Keep call/SMS preferences on your primary SIM if that is what you want.

Jump to troubleshooting if needed: wrong SIM for data or multiple eSIM confusion.

8. How to Turn Data Roaming On for the Travel eSIM

Many travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled on the travel line. This is not the same as expensive home-carrier roaming. You are usually allowing the travel eSIM profile to use its partner network abroad.

Typical paths:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile → tap the travel eSIM → turn Data Roaming on (if shown).
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming (and/or open the specific SIM’s settings, depending on One UI).
  • Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → select travel eSIM → Roaming.

If your plan instructions say roaming must be on, leave it on for the travel eSIM. You can still keep your primary SIM’s roaming off to avoid surprise home-carrier charges.

9. How to Keep Your Primary SIM Active

Most travelers want the home number available for calls/SMS/2FA while using the travel eSIM for data.

Typical dual-SIM setup:

  • Primary / home SIM: ON for calls and SMS (if that is your preference)
  • Travel eSIM: ON and selected for mobile data
  • Primary SIM data roaming: often OFF to avoid home-carrier roaming charges
  • Travel eSIM data roaming: ON if the plan requires it

If the travel eSIM will not connect, temporarily disabling the primary SIM can be a useful test (see Primary SIM interference). That is a troubleshooting step, not a permanent requirement.

10. How to Check Whether the eSIM Is Working

  1. Confirm the correct eSIM profile is enabled and labeled.
  2. Confirm that same profile is selected for mobile data.
  3. Confirm data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM if required.
  4. Look for a network name / signal indicator on the travel line (not SOS-only, if you expect normal data service).
  5. Turn Wi‑Fi off briefly and open a simple webpage or speed/test ping site.
  6. Try a messaging app that needs data (WhatsApp, etc.).
  7. If it fails, do not change every setting at once—use the Troubleshooting Hub.

Label Your eSIMs (Important)

If you travel often, your phone can accumulate several eSIM profiles: home eSIM, last month’s Thailand plan, an expired Europe plan, and the SparkRoam plan you need today.

Without labels, it is easy to enable the wrong profile and conclude “my eSIM doesn’t work.”

Use clear names such as:

  • SparkRoam — France
  • SparkRoam — Japan
  • Home SIM
  • UK SIM
  • Old — Thailand

Recommendation: always rename/label eSIMs when multiple SIM/eSIM profiles are installed. Do this immediately after installation, before you forget which QR belonged to which trip.

Dual-SIM Settings Explained

These are separate controls. Customers often mix them up:

SettingWhat it means
SIM enabled / disabledWhether that SIM/eSIM profile is active on the phone at all
Selected for mobile dataWhich line the phone uses for internet
Selected for callsWhich line places/receives ordinary cellular calls (if the plan supports voice)
Selected for SMSWhich line sends/receives ordinary SMS (if supported)
Data roamingWhether that line is allowed to roam onto partner networks
Network selectionAutomatic or manual choice of the mobile operator the line registers on

A travel eSIM can be enabled and still unused for data. Or it can be selected for data while an old profile is the one actually enabled. Check both.

Before You Fly / When You Land

Before departure

  • Confirm eSIM compatibility and unlocked status
  • Buy the plan that matches your destination or region
  • Install when convenient—often before you fly—if your plan allows early install
  • Label the eSIM clearly
  • Know which line will be used for mobile data
  • Know whether data roaming must be enabled on the travel eSIM
  • Keep primary-SIM roaming off if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges
  • Save order/activation details offline

You do not always have to install before departure, but doing so on home Wi‑Fi is usually calmer than troubleshooting at an airport.

After landing

  1. Turn on the travel eSIM (the correctly labeled one).
  2. Select it for mobile data.
  3. Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM if required.
  4. Allow a minute or two for network registration.
  5. Turn Wi‑Fi off briefly and test mobile data.
  6. Keep primary SIM settings as intended for calls/SMS.
  7. If it fails, jump to I just landed and my eSIM isn’t working.

Calls, SMS, and Messaging Apps

Many travel eSIMs are data-only. Data-only service can power internet apps, but it does not automatically give you a local phone number for ordinary cellular calls and SMS.

ServiceWhat a data-only travel eSIM typically provides
Mobile data / internetYes, when connected to a supported network
Ordinary cellular voice callsOnly if your specific plan includes voice—do not assume it
Ordinary SMSOnly if your specific plan includes SMS—do not assume it
WhatsApp / Signal / similarWorks over data/internet once mobile data or Wi‑Fi is working
iMessageCan work over data/internet; delivery behavior can still depend on Apple ID and device settings
FaceTimeUses data/internet; not the same as cellular voice minutes

If you need to receive SMS codes on your home number, keep the primary SIM active for SMS while using the travel eSIM for data.

APN and Network Settings

What APN means

APN (Access Point Name) settings tell the phone how to reach a carrier’s data network. Many modern eSIM plans configure this automatically.

When APN settings may matter

  • You have signal / network registration but no data
  • Your plan instructions explicitly mention APN values
  • Support asks you to verify APN after other checks fail

How to recognize a possible APN-related problem

Signal appears, the correct eSIM is selected for data, roaming is on if required, and websites still fail—while Wi‑Fi works. Even then, APN is not the first guess; wrong data line and dual-SIM interference are more common.

Where APN settings may be found

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile → travel eSIM → Cellular Data Network / Mobile Data Network (if shown)
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names
  • Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → travel eSIM → Access Point Names / Advanced

Menus vary. Some devices hide APN controls for certain plans.

When NOT to change APN settings

  • You have not yet checked the correct eSIM profile and data line
  • You do not have plan-provided APN values
  • Everything already works
  • You are guessing values from unrelated websites

Do not invent SparkRoam APN values. Use only values from your plan instructions or SparkRoam support.

Network selection vs APN

Network selection chooses which operator your phone registers with. APN settings configure data access after/with that registration. They are different tools.

Hotspot / Tethering

Hotspot/tethering shares your phone’s mobile data with a laptop or another device. Support depends on the plan, the host network, and your phone settings.

Basic checks:

  1. Confirm mobile data works on the phone itself first.
  2. Confirm the travel eSIM is the data line.
  3. Open the phone’s hotspot/tethering settings and enable personal hotspot.
  4. Check whether your plan mentions hotspot allowance or restrictions.
  5. Retry with one client device first.

If phone browsing works but hotspot does not, the cause may be plan policy, device settings, or network restrictions—not a failed eSIM install.

Security and Safety

  • Do not share your QR code or activation codes publicly (social media, public screenshots, forums).
  • Treat activation information as sensitive.
  • Use trusted Wi‑Fi when installation needs an internet connection.
  • Avoid deleting a working eSIM unless necessary.
  • Do not repeatedly reinstall an eSIM just because data is temporarily unavailable.
  • If a device is lost, follow your normal device security steps and contact support about the plan if needed.

Common Mistakes

  • Installing on an unsupported device
  • Using a carrier-locked phone
  • Installing or enabling the wrong eSIM profile
  • Scanning a damaged/blurry QR code
  • Trying to install without the internet connection your phone requires for download
  • Turning the eSIM off after installation and forgetting to turn it back on
  • Leaving the primary SIM selected for mobile data
  • Forgetting data roaming on the travel eSIM when the plan requires it
  • Expecting a data-only eSIM to provide ordinary cellular calls/SMS
  • Deleting an eSIM while troubleshooting simple settings issues
  • Assuming “no signal” always means installation failed
  • Changing every setting at once so you cannot tell what helped

🛠 Troubleshooting Hub

Start here if something is wrong. Make one change at a time when you can, then retest. Otherwise you will not know which step fixed the issue.

Try these first

  1. Confirm the travel eSIM is turned on (the correctly labeled profile).
  2. Confirm that same profile is selected for mobile data.
  3. Confirm data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM if your plan requires it.
  4. Check whether the phone registered on a network (not stuck on No Service/SOS if you expect normal data).
  5. Toggle airplane mode on for 15–30 seconds, then off.
  6. Restart the phone.
  7. Check APN only if your plan instructions mention it or support asks you to.
  8. Test again with Wi‑Fi off.

These steps are a fast path, not a guarantee. Some issues need the deeper checks below.

Quick decision tree

Is the eSIM installed?
NO → Check compatibility → unlocked status → QR/manual install → install troubleshooting
YES → Is the correct profile enabled and selected for data?
NO → Fix profile + data line → retest
YES → Do you have signal / network registration?
NO → Roaming → network selection → airplane mode → restart → temporary primary-SIM off test
YES → Is mobile data working?

I Just Landed and My eSIM Isn’t Working

Use this arrival fast path. Exact menus vary by device.

  1. Confirm the SparkRoam / travel eSIM is ON.
  2. Confirm it is selected for mobile data.
  3. Confirm required roaming is enabled on that line.
  4. Confirm you enabled the correct profile—not an old “Travel” or expired country eSIM.
  5. Wait briefly for network registration.
  6. Toggle airplane mode on, wait, then off.
  7. Restart the phone if needed.
  8. Temporarily disable the other SIM(s), leave only the travel eSIM enabled, and test.
  9. If it works, re-enable the primary SIM and re-check that the travel eSIM remains the data line.
  10. Check network selection (automatic first; manual only if needed).
  11. Check APN only if plan instructions or support say so.
  12. If still unresolved, contact SparkRoam support with the details in support escalation.

Everything Looks Correct but It Still Doesn’t Work

If the eSIM is installed, roaming appears on, and the data line looks right, do not repeat the same three toggles forever. Escalate in order:

  1. Verify the exact profile by label (not just “an eSIM”).
  2. Verify the data line again after a restart—some phones revert preferences.
  3. Temporarily disable other SIM/eSIM profiles and test with only the travel eSIM on.
  4. Airplane-mode refresh, then full restart.
  5. Check network selection / try another supported network if manual selection is available.
  6. Review APN only with plan-provided values.
  7. Consider whether you are outside coverage or the plan does not include this location.
  8. Ask SparkRoam support before deleting/reinstalling.
  9. Reinstall/re-add only when support confirms that is appropriate and you still have activation access.

I Can’t Install My eSIM

Start with compatibility, unlock status, internet for download, and QR/manual details. Then use the specific install errors below.

  2. Use manual codes if QR path fails and codes exist.
  3. Check whether another profile is mid-setup and stuck.

If that does not work

  1. Capture the exact error screen.
  2. Contact support rather than repeated blind retries.

When to contact support

Repeated activation failures should go to support with screenshots.

My phone says the eSIM is already in use

What you may see

Messages suggesting the plan/profile is already installed or in use.

Why it can happen

The eSIM may already be on this phone under another label, or was installed on another device, or a previous install attempt partially completed.

What to check first

  1. Search your SIM list for an unlabeled or oddly named plan.
  2. Check whether you previously installed this order.
  3. Confirm you are not scanning an old QR from a different trip.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Look through every installed eSIM label carefully.
  2. If it is already on this phone, enable that profile instead of installing again.
  3. If it was installed on a different device, contact support about next steps—do not assume reuse is allowed.

If that does not work

  1. Do not delete profiles casually.
  2. Ask SparkRoam support how to proceed for your specific plan.

When to contact support

Ask support whether the activation can be moved/reissued; policies can vary by plan.

Include whether primary SIM still has service when you contact support.

My phone says “SOS”

What you may see

Status shows SOS or SOS only.

Why it can happen

The phone may have emergency-only access and is not fully registered on a usable data network for your travel eSIM.

What to check first

  1. Is the travel eSIM enabled and selected for data?
  2. Are you outdoors / in a covered town center?
  3. Is this immediately after landing (registration delay)?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Wait briefly after enabling the line.
  2. Airplane mode refresh.
  3. Restart.
  4. Temporary single-SIM test with only the travel eSIM.

If that does not work

  1. Manual network selection if your device allows it.
  2. Confirm plan coverage for the exact territory you are in.

When to contact support

Contact support if SOS persists in a major covered area after the arrival checklist.

I have signal but no internet

What you may see

Bars/network name appear, but websites and apps fail with Wi‑Fi off.

Why it can happen

Wrong data line, roaming disabled, APN issue, network connected without data path, or captive/local network weirdness.

What to check first

  1. Is the travel eSIM selected for mobile data—not merely enabled?
  2. Data roaming on for that eSIM if required?
  3. Is an old eSIM the one actually showing signal?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Reassign mobile data to the SparkRoam profile.
  2. Toggle cellular data off/on for that line.
  3. Airplane mode refresh.
  4. Temporary disable other SIMs and retest.

If that does not work

  1. Check APN only with plan-provided values.
  2. Try manual network selection to another supported operator if available.

When to contact support

Send support the network name shown and screenshots of data-line + roaming settings.

Mobile data is not working

What you may see

Mobile data switch seems on, but nothing loads.

Why it can happen

Same family as signal-but-no-internet; also low/exhausted plan data or paused plan state.

What to check first

  1. Correct data SIM
  2. Roaming
  3. Plan still active / has remaining data if your plan tracks that

Step-by-step fix

  1. Reset the data-line selection.
  2. Restart.
  3. Single-SIM test.
  4. Confirm you are testing with Wi‑Fi off.

If that does not work

  1. Review plan status with support.
  2. Avoid deleting the eSIM while checking quota/status.

When to contact support

Ask support to confirm plan status if settings appear perfect.

Internet works but is very slow

What you may see

Pages load, but speeds are poor for maps/streaming.

Why it can happen

Coverage edge, congestion, network mode (3G fallback), indoor signal, or plan/network policy.

What to check first

  1. Are you indoors/remote?
  2. Does speed improve outdoors?
  3. Is the phone on an unexpected network?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Move location and retest.
  2. Airplane mode refresh.
  3. Check whether network mode is limited; use the phone’s recommended automatic mode unless support advises otherwise.
  4. Try manual selection of another supported network if available.

If that does not work

  1. Accept that remote areas can be slower.
  2. If speeds are unusable in a major city center, contact support with speed-test context and network name.

When to contact support

Support can help interpret whether the issue looks like coverage vs plan/network routing.

5G is not working

What you may see

Phone stays on LTE/4G or does not show 5G.

Why it can happen

Local network may not offer 5G to your plan, device 5G band limits, indoor coverage, or plan is LTE-focused.

What to check first

  1. Does the area have 5G from the host network?
  2. Is 5G enabled in phone network mode settings?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Keep automatic network mode unless you have a reason to force a mode.
  2. Test outdoors.
  3. Remember: LTE/4G can still be perfectly usable for travel data.

If that does not work

  1. Do not assume missing 5G means the eSIM failed.
  2. Contact support only if you were promised 5G for that plan/destination and LTE is also unusable.

When to contact support

Ask support what network technology to expect for your plan; expectations vary.

4G/LTE is not working

What you may see

Phone stuck on slower technology or cannot hold LTE.

Why it can happen

Coverage, device settings, network registration, or temporary operator issue.

What to check first

  1. Signal present at all?
  2. Correct eSIM/data line?
  3. Remote area?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Airplane mode / restart.
  2. Confirm network mode allows LTE.
  3. Try another supported network manually if available.

If that does not work

  1. Retest in a denser coverage area.
  2. Contact support with the network name and radio technology shown.

When to contact support

Include screenshots of the status bar/network details if your phone shows them.

My phone connected to the wrong network

What you may see

The travel line shows an unexpected operator name.

Why it can happen

Automatic selection chose a partner/roaming network that is weak where you are standing, or a network not ideal for your plan.

What to check first

  1. Is data still working? If yes, it may be fine.
  2. Is the network name completely blank/wrong while data fails?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Use network selection to choose another available network.
  2. Return to automatic selection after testing if that works better.
  3. Reboot after changing networks.

If that does not work

  1. If no listed network works, escalate with the list of networks shown.

When to contact support

Tell support which networks appear in manual selection.

I need to manually select a network

What you may see

Automatic selection fails or sticks on a poor network.

Why it can happen

Registration issues or weak automatic choice in a multi-operator area.

What to check first

  1. Know how to open network selection on your device
  2. Be prepared for a short search time while the phone scans

Step-by-step fix

  1. iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile → Network Selection → turn off automatic → pick a network.
  2. Samsung/Pixel/Android: Mobile networks → Network operators → search/select (labels vary).
  3. Select a network, wait for registration, retest data.
  4. If it fails, try the next plausible network, one at a time.

If that does not work

  1. Return to automatic selection afterward if manual picks also fail.
  2. Contact support with the networks you tried.

When to contact support

Manual selection is a troubleshooting tool, not something every traveler needs daily.

Data roaming is not working

What you may see

Roaming toggle is on, but travel data still fails—or the toggle is missing.

Why it can happen

Toggle applied to the wrong SIM, plan requires roaming but phone reverted, or device hides per-SIM roaming controls.

What to check first

  1. Did you enable roaming on the travel eSIM, not only the primary SIM?
  2. Is the travel eSIM selected for data?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Open the travel eSIM’s own settings page and enable roaming there if shown.
  2. Turn the travel eSIM off/on.
  3. Restart and confirm the roaming toggle stayed on.

If that does not work

  1. Single-SIM test.
  2. Contact support if the roaming control is missing or will not stay enabled.

When to contact support

Mention whether primary roaming is on/off—these are separate.

My APN may be incorrect

What you may see

Signal exists, data line looks right, still no internet; someone suggested APN.

Why it can happen

Missing/incorrect APN on plans that need manual values—or unrelated issue mislabeled as APN.

What to check first

  1. Have you already ruled out wrong data line and dual-SIM interference?
  2. Do you have plan-provided APN values?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Open APN settings for the travel eSIM only.
  2. Compare with plan instructions—do not invent values.
  3. Save, restart, retest.

If that does not work

  1. Revert changes if you are unsure.
  2. Ask SparkRoam support for the correct APN guidance for your plan.

When to contact support

Never apply random APN values from unrelated blogs.

Calls / SMS Aren’t Working

First ask whether your plan is data-only. If it is, ordinary cellular calls/SMS on the travel eSIM may be unavailable by design.

Calls are not working

What you may see

Outgoing/incoming cellular calls fail on the travel line.

Why it can happen

Data-only plan, wrong call line selected, or no voice service on that profile.

What to check first

  1. Does the plan include voice?
  2. Which SIM is selected for calls?
  3. Do internet calling apps work over data?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Place calls on the primary SIM if that is your voice line.
  2. Use WhatsApp/FaceTime/other internet calling once data works.
  3. Do not treat missing travel-line voice as a failed data install.

If that does not work

  1. If your plan should include voice and still fails, contact support with plan details.

When to contact support

Clarify in your ticket whether data works while voice does not.

SMS is not working

What you may see

Ordinary SMS will not send/receive on the travel eSIM.

Why it can happen

Data-only plan or SMS assigned to another SIM.

What to check first

  1. Is SMS expected on this plan?
  2. Is primary SIM still selected for SMS?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Receive 2FA SMS on the primary SIM when possible.
  2. Use app-based messages over data.
  3. Confirm SMS line selection in dual-SIM settings.

If that does not work

  1. Contact support only if your plan is supposed to include SMS and primary-SIM SMS also misbehaves after eSIM changes.

When to contact support

Mention which SIM is selected for SMS in your report.

WhatsApp / iMessage / FaceTime questions

What you may see

Chat/call apps behave unexpectedly after switching data lines.

Why it can happen

These apps need internet. Number verification and Apple services have their own rules beyond the travel eSIM.

What to check first

  1. Does mobile data work in a browser with Wi‑Fi off?
  2. Is WhatsApp using the internet path successfully?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Fix mobile data first using the data-line/roaming checks.
  2. Keep your WhatsApp account on your normal number; the app can run over travel data.
  3. For iMessage/FaceTime, ensure you are signed into your Apple ID; they use data/internet when available.

If that does not work

  1. If browser data works but one app fails, reinstall/update that app or check its network permissions.
  2. Apple/Google account issues are separate from eSIM installation.

When to contact support

Contact SparkRoam support for connectivity; contact Apple/Google/app support for account-specific messaging bugs.

Hotspot / tethering is not working

What you may see

Phone has data, but laptop/other phone cannot get online through hotspot.

Why it can happen

Plan/network hotspot policy, phone hotspot settings, or client device issues.

What to check first

  1. Does the phone itself have working mobile data on the travel eSIM?
  2. Is hotspot enabled in system settings?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Enable personal hotspot/tethering.
  2. Reconnect the client device.
  3. Test with a single client.
  4. Restart both devices.

If that does not work

  1. Check plan terms for hotspot support.
  2. Try another client device.
  3. Contact support if phone data works and hotspot is supposed to be included.

When to contact support

Do not delete the eSIM to troubleshoot hotspot alone.

My primary SIM stopped working

What you may see

Home line lost service after eSIM changes.

Why it can happen

Primary SIM accidentally disabled, call/SMS line switched, or temporary dual-SIM glitch.

What to check first

  1. Is the primary SIM toggled on?
  2. Are calls/SMS assigned to it?
  3. Any temporary single-SIM test still in effect?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Re-enable the primary SIM.
  2. Reassign calls/SMS to the primary line if desired.
  3. Restart.
  4. Confirm the travel eSIM remains the data line if that is what you want.

If that does not work

  1. If the primary SIM still fails with the travel eSIM removed/disabled, the issue may be with the home carrier—contact them too.

When to contact support

Tell support whether the primary SIM fails only when the travel eSIM is on.

I am using dual SIM and data is going through the wrong SIM

What you may see

Travel eSIM is on, but apps still use the home SIM (or an old eSIM) for data.

Why it can happen

Data-line preference not changed, or phone reverted after restart/Wi‑Fi changes.

What to check first

  1. Which SIM is listed as Mobile Data / Preferred data SIM?
  2. Did you recently restart?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Explicitly select the SparkRoam eSIM for mobile data.
  2. Turn off mobile data on the wrong line if your phone offers per-line controls.
  3. Disable old travel eSIMs you do not intend to use.
  4. Retest with Wi‑Fi off.

If that does not work

  1. After it works, re-check the setting once more—some devices reset preferences.
  2. Label profiles so this is harder to repeat.

When to contact support

Contact support if the phone will not keep the travel eSIM as the data line.

The eSIM disappeared from my phone

What you may see

The profile is no longer listed in SIM settings.

Why it can happen

Accidental deletion, device reset, OS bug, or viewing the wrong settings page.

What to check first

  1. Check every SIM/eSIM list carefully.
  2. Did anyone reset network settings or erase the phone?

Step-by-step fix

  1. If deleted, do not guess—contact SparkRoam support about reinstall options for your plan.
  2. Have your order/QR details ready.
  3. Do not scan random old QR codes from other trips.

If that does not work

  1. If the phone was restored from backup, follow support guidance before repeated installs.

When to contact support

Ask support whether reinstallation is available before you assume it is.

I accidentally deleted my eSIM

What you may see

You removed the travel eSIM profile.

Why it can happen

User deletion or reset. Reuse of the same QR/profile is not something this guide can promise.

What to check first

  1. Do you still have the original order/QR/manual codes?
  2. Was the eSIM working before deletion?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Stop further install experiments for a moment.
  2. Contact SparkRoam support and ask about reinstall / replacement options for your plan.
  3. Only reinstall when you know that path is valid for your eSIM.

If that does not work

  1. If support provides a new activation method, install once carefully and label it.

When to contact support

Do not invent a reinstall policy—ask support for your case.

I installed the eSIM too early

What you may see

You installed days/weeks before the trip and worry it will not work later.

Why it can happen

Early install is often fine. The usual risk is turning the wrong line on at home or consuming plan validity if the plan’s validity starts on first install/first use—check your plan terms.

What to check first

  1. Read your plan’s activation/validity rules in the order details.
  2. Is the eSIM merely installed, or already active/consuming validity?

Step-by-step fix

  1. If the plan allows install-before-travel, keep the eSIM off until you need it.
  2. Label it now.
  3. At arrival, enable it and select it for data.
  4. If validity concerns you, ask support before installing another profile.

If that does not work

  1. Do not delete a healthy installed profile just because you installed early.

When to contact support

Ask support to clarify validity start rules for your specific plan if the order email is unclear.

I arrived at my destination and the eSIM does not connect

What you may see

At the destination, data never comes online.

Why it can happen

Settings, registration delay, wrong profile, coverage, or dual-SIM conflict.

What to check first

  1. Follow the arrival checklist first: I just landed…

Step-by-step fix

  1. Correct profile on + data line + roaming.
  2. Airplane mode / restart.
  3. Temporary primary-SIM off test.
  4. Network selection if needed.

If that does not work

  1. Confirm you are in a covered location for the plan.
  2. Escalate to everything looks correct.

When to contact support

Contact support with destination, network shown, and SIM-settings screenshots.

I am moving between countries

What you may see

The eSIM worked in one country and struggles after a border crossing or flight.

Why it can happen

Plan may be single-country, regional coverage may differ, or the phone needs to re-register.

What to check first

  1. Does your plan include the new country?
  2. Did the phone keep the correct data line after the crossing?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Re-check data line and roaming.
  2. Airplane mode refresh after crossing borders.
  3. Restart.
  4. If you need multi-country coverage, consider a regional or global plan for the next trip.

If that does not work

  1. Browse regional guides such as Europe, Asia, Africa, Caribbean, Oceania, or Americas.
  2. For frequent multi-country travel, see the global eSIM guide.

When to contact support

Contact support if the plan should include both countries and registration fails in the second one.

I have restarted but it still does not work

What you may see

Restart and airplane mode already tried; still offline.

Why it can happen

Deeper dual-SIM, profile, coverage, or plan-state issue—not a simple radio glitch.

What to check first

  1. Did you verify the labeled SparkRoam profile after restart?
  2. Did the phone keep the travel eSIM as the data line?

Step-by-step fix

  1. Re-select the travel eSIM for mobile data after restart.
  2. Temporarily disable other SIMs and retest.
  3. Try manual network selection.
  4. Follow everything looks correct.

If that does not work

  1. Do not delete the eSIM yet.
  2. Contact support with the full settings checklist from the support section.

When to contact support

Restarts help many cases, but not all. Escalate with evidence rather than looping the same reboot.

Primary SIM Interference

Sometimes the travel eSIM settings look correct, but the phone still will not connect until other SIMs are temporarily disabled. Dual-SIM behavior varies by device and OS.

Quick test (temporary):

  1. Leave only the travel eSIM enabled.
  2. Disable the primary / other SIM(s) temporarily.
  3. Confirm the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  4. Confirm roaming on the travel eSIM if required.
  5. Test mobile data with Wi‑Fi off.
  6. If it works, re-enable the primary SIM.
  7. Re-check that the travel eSIM is still the mobile-data line.
  8. Configure calls/SMS back onto the primary SIM if that is what you want.

This is a troubleshooting step, not a rule that every customer must permanently disable their primary SIM.

Multiple eSIM Confusion

If several eSIMs are installed, the phone may be using the wrong one.

Example:

  • SIM A = old/expired eSIM
  • SIM B = SparkRoam travel eSIM
  • SIM C = eSIM from a previous country

The customer thinks “My eSIM doesn’t work,” but the phone is simply using the wrong profile.

What to do:

  1. Open your SIM/eSIM list and identify every profile.
  2. Find the SparkRoam / current-trip profile.
  3. Rename it immediately (for example, SparkRoam — Jamaica).
  4. Turn off old travel profiles you do not intend to use right now.
  5. Select the labeled SparkRoam profile for mobile data.
  6. Retest.

You do not have to delete old profiles. Clear labels and careful enable/disable choices prevent most multi-eSIM mistakes.

Wrong eSIM Enabled

This is different from “wrong data line.” Here, the enabled travel toggle points at the wrong profile entirely—for example, an old “Travel” label instead of “SparkRoam — France.”

  1. Compare labels and install dates/order names if shown.
  2. Enable only the SparkRoam profile you bought for this trip.
  3. Disable the mistaken profile.
  4. Assign mobile data to the correct profile.

Old / Expired eSIM Profiles

Old eSIM profiles can remain visible after a trip. Visibility does not mean you should use them. An expired profile can also create confusion if it is left enabled.

  • Label old profiles with “Old — …” if you keep them.
  • Leave them disabled during the current trip.
  • Delete only when you are sure you no longer need them and understand you may not be able to restore them.

Airplane Mode, Restart, and Network Refresh

A short radio refresh can help the phone re-register on the network:

  1. Turn airplane mode on.
  2. Wait 15–30 seconds.
  3. Turn airplane mode off.
  4. Wait for network registration.
  5. Confirm the travel eSIM is still the data line.
  6. If needed, restart the phone and re-check data-line + roaming settings.

This can sometimes help. It is not a guaranteed fix.

Reinstallation as a Last-Resort Step

In some real cases, an eSIM was installed on the same device, settings look correct, and re-adding the profile can clear a bad installation/registration state. That does not mean you should delete eSIMs casually.

Before considering removal:

  • Confirm you still have the required activation information.
  • Understand that QR / profile reuse is not guaranteed—policies vary by plan.
  • Do not delete a working eSIM to experiment.
  • Contact SparkRoam support before deleting if you are unsure whether reinstall is allowed for your eSIM.

This guide does not invent a SparkRoam reinstallation policy. Ask support for the correct next step for your order.

Do Not Change Everything at Once

Change one major setting at a time when possible: data line, then roaming, then airplane mode, then primary-SIM temporary disable, then network selection. Retest after each change so you know what helped.

When You Should Contact SparkRoam Support

Contact SparkRoam support when you have worked through the relevant checklist and still cannot connect, or when activation/deletion/reinstall questions need an account-specific answer.

Send this information up front to reduce back-and-forth:

  • Device model
  • OS version (iOS / Android / One UI version if known)
  • Destination / current country or territory
  • Whether the eSIM is installed
  • Exact eSIM label shown on the phone
  • Exact error message (word for word)
  • Whether signal / network name is visible
  • Whether mobile data is enabled and which SIM is selected for data
  • Whether data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM
  • Network shown (automatic or manual)
  • What you already tried (airplane mode, restart, primary SIM temporarily off, etc.)
  • Screenshots of SIM settings, data-line selection, and the error screen where appropriate

Use the support channel provided in your SparkRoam order confirmation or account communications. This article does not invent a support URL.

FAQ

Do I need Wi‑Fi to install an eSIM?

Usually yes for downloading the profile. After installation, travel use depends on mobile network registration at your destination.

Can I install the eSIM before my flight?

Often yes. Check your plan’s validity/activation rules, label the profile, and consider leaving it off until you need it. See installed too early.

Why is my primary SIM still using data?

Because the phone’s mobile-data line preference may still point at the primary SIM. Enabling the travel eSIM is not enough—select it for data. See select mobile data.

Should data roaming be on?

For many travel eSIMs, yes—on the travel line. Keep home-SIM roaming off if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Does a travel eSIM include a phone number?

Not unless your specific plan says so. Many are data-only. See calls, SMS, and messaging.

Can I keep WhatsApp on my normal number?

Yes. WhatsApp can use travel mobile data while remaining registered to your normal number.

Why do I see SOS?

The phone may have emergency-only access and is not fully registered for ordinary data yet. Use the SOS steps.

I have multiple eSIMs. What should I do?

Label them, enable only the current SparkRoam profile, and select it for data. See multiple eSIM confusion.

Should I delete and reinstall?

Not as a first step. Ask SparkRoam support before deleting if you are unsure about reuse. See reinstallation caution.

Hotspot is not working. Is the eSIM broken?

Not necessarily. Confirm phone data works first, then check plan/device hotspot support. See hotspot troubleshooting.

Do I need to change APN?

Only when plan instructions or support say so—and only with provided values. See APN and network settings.

The eSIM worked at home Wi‑Fi install but not after landing. Did install fail?

Not necessarily. Installation and destination network registration are different steps. Use the arrival fast path.

Can dual SIM cause problems even when settings look right?

Yes. Temporarily disabling the other SIM can sometimes help as a test. See primary SIM interference.
